Who Is Cardiac Screening For?
Cardiac screening and assessment can benefit:
-
Competitive and elite athletes
-
Recreational exercisers and “weekend athletes”
-
Children and young adults undertaking competitive sport
-
Individuals starting a new fitness programme
-
Adults over 35 increasing training intensity
-
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, dizziness or breathlessness
Screening is particularly important as some heart conditions can be silent but may increase risk during intense exercise. Early detection helps ensure safe participation in sport and physical activity.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Resting ECG recording the heart's electrical activity - included in all screening packages. Identifies rhythm abnormalities and structural markers.
Echocardiogram
Ultrasound assessment of the heart's structure and function. Essential for confirming athlete's heart and excluding hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
Exercise stress testing
Supervised exercise test with cardiac monitoring. Recommended for athletes over 35 and professional sportspeople, particularly those with symptoms during sport.
Ambulatory ECG monitoring
Wearable 24 hours - 14 days heart monitor to investigate intermittent symptoms such as palpitations or irregular heartbeat during training or daily activity.
Stress Echocardiogram
A specialised heart ultrasound scan used to identify possible narrowings in heart arteries. It is called a stress test as the heart rate is increased during the test in a controlled way.
Advanced Cardiac Imaging
Sometimes more advance imaging techniques are needed to diagnose cardiac conditions. These tests include: CT scanning of heart arteries or heart MRI scans (also known as cardiac MRI scans).
